General information

Laboratory Eco Urban Planning activates in the frame of implementation of art. 37 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, which presumes the right of citizens on healthy environment, Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro (5 June 1992), the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, 2002, Convention on wetland of International Importance, especially as a habitat for bird water species (Ramsar Convention, 1971), Strategy on Sustainable development for extended European Union, June, 2006. Laboratory also is involved in implementation of the provisions of the national Law Nr. 86 from 29.05.2014 on environmental impact assessment.

Main scientific directions of the laboratory:

1. Materials, technologies and innovative products

Main goal of the studies:

Amelioration of the state of environment in urban ecosystems (Chișinău, Orhei, Florești et al.) through assessment of the human impact, development of the treatment technologies, valorification and neutralization of wastes, implementation of achieved results for assurance of the adequate management of environment and thus to contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

Fundamental research:

• Development of the concept for waste management in the Republic of Moldova;
• Development of the indexes, dependencies and correlations which are caused by the human impact determined in the process of global impact assessment on urban ecosystems;
• Elaboration of the methodology on environmental expertise and environmental impact assessment of certain public or private projects.

Applied research:

• Environmental impact assessment on components of environment: air, water, soil, biological diversity of urban ecosystems (Chișinău, Orhei, Florești etc.), as a result of human activities and development of recommendations on stability assurance of natural ecosystems;
• Development and implementation of the treatment technologies, valorification and neutralization of wastes (dangerous, municipal, solid, sludge etc. jointly with other biodegradable ones);
• Elaboration of treatment technologies, valorification and neutralization of the industrial wastes;
• Development of the environmental expertise, audit and assessment of the economic activities on the state of environment.

Importance of the research activities:

Studies performed in the frame of laboratory contribute to the implementation of the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro (5 June 1992), UN Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, 2002, and facilitate implementation of solutions on fundamental problems regarding protection of the biocenoz diversity, habitats etc. of the stations in the locative, urban and technogenic sectors, (Chișinău, Orhei, Florești) etc., assurance of the ecosystems’ stability, waste management and theirs’ utilization as a natural resource etc. thus assuring significant diminution of environmental pollution (circa 30%), obtaining of the economic profit (circa 25%) and creation of new jobs. Performing of the environmental expertise assures right of the beneficiaries on construction and exploitation of economic objects. The results of the research activities serve as a basis for development of practical recommendations on reduction of the impact of economic activities (enterprises, transport, wastes etc.) on the state of environment, through implementation of the advanced technologies in waste processing etc.

Methods, principles and means of research:

Research methods in ecology and environmental protection. The base for research activities of the laboratory are presented by physical and chemical methods with analysis and calculation of the prejudice. In addition to it laboratory performs analysis of the chemical transformation of wastes, developed methods for estimation of the biodiversity indices and assessment of the impact of wastes on biocenozes of urban ecosystems as well as elaboration of certain theoretical and practical approaches on waste management using the SWOT analysis, processing and analysis of statistical data, extrapolation on the base of systemic and complex analysis of the obtained results.

Informational support for processing the obtained results is based on the analysis of scientific literature and statistical books, usage of data presented in annual reports of the National Bureau for Statistics, State Ecological Inspectorate of the Ministry of Environment, official papers (legislation, normative, Governmental Decisions) of the Republic of Moldova, EU Environmental Directives in the field of environmental impact assessment, waste management, investigations and calculation methods developed in the laboratory.

The subject of the research are urban ecosystems, wastes accumulated on different industrial enterprises and municipal dumps, systematic approach and methods for assessment of the environmental prejudice, the impact of wastes on the state of biodiversity and dependence of the prejudice value in regard to toxicity of wastes.

Impact assessment on the state of environment in urban ecosystems is performed based on data on the volume of wastes accumulated and stocked on industrial enterprises and municipal solid wastes dumps, its composition, chemical properties, etc. These studies are performed together with the analysis of samples (water, soil, biodiversity) of environmental components processed in the field and laboratory conditions.

Research activities on the environmental impact assessment are performed based on the territorial (functional/case-study areas) approach: enterprises, dumps, urban ecosystems, administrative districts and regions. More detailed analysis, conclusions and recommendations for estimation of the type of toxic wastes stocked in essential volume in different parts of the country are also performed for development of relevant recommendations, preparing of program papers etc.
